Ruf Records

Ruf Records is a German independent blues label founded in 1994 by Thomas Ruf. Based in the small village of Lindewerra in Thuringia, the label’s motto is “Where Blues Crosses Over.” It was created specifically to support the career of Chicago blues guitarist and singer Luther Allison, whom Ruf managed, and has grown into one of Europe’s most important and enduring blues imprints, releasing hundreds of albums and helping launch or sustain the careers of many contemporary blues artists.

History and Ownership

Thomas Ruf, who grew up on a wine farm in Germany’s Black Forest, first encountered Luther Allison in the 1980s while promoting concerts. The meeting proved transformative: Ruf became Allison’s European booking agent, manager, and close collaborator. When Allison needed a label for new material in 1994 and found limited options, Ruf founded Ruf Records as a dedicated home for him. Early releases focused on Allison’s European and later U.S. recordings, helping fuel the guitarist’s highly successful late-career comeback.

After Allison’s death in 1997, the label continued under Ruf’s ownership and direction. It expanded its roster while remaining committed to blues and blues-rock. Ruf Records has maintained its independence, with Thomas Ruf at the helm, and has built a strong international presence through touring, distribution, and the annual Blues Caravan package tours that began in 2005. The company has sold millions of albums, earned Blues Music Award nominations, two Grammy nominations, and received the Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award in 2007.

Notable Artists and Recordings

Ruf’s catalog is rich in contemporary blues and blues-rock, with a strong emphasis on guitarists and dynamic live performers:

  • Luther Allison — The label’s founding artist. Key releases include Live in Paris, Where Have You Been? (Live in Montreux 1976–1994), and material that supported his 1990s resurgence. Allison’s powerful performances and Ruf’s support were central to the label’s early identity and success.

  • Bernard Allison — Luther’s son has been a long-time Ruf artist, carrying forward the family legacy with albums such as Times Are Changing, Higher Power, Energized – Live in Europe, and later works including Highs & Lows. He remains closely associated with the label.
  • Walter Trout — The fiery blues-rock guitarist has released multiple albums on Ruf, beginning with titles such as Walter Trout and Livin’ Every Day (with the Free Radicals). His high-energy style and prolific output have been a major part of the label’s international profile.
  • Samantha Fish — One of the most successful artists to emerge via Ruf. Her early albums helped establish her as a leading contemporary blues guitarist and vocalist; she also appeared on Blues Caravan packages (including the “Girls with Guitars” lineups).
  • Ana Popović — The Serbian-born guitarist recorded for Ruf, contributing to the label’s reputation for strong female blues artists with albums that showcased her technical skill and songwriting.
  • Joanne Shaw Taylor — Her early Ruf releases, including White Sugar, helped launch her career as a prominent British blues-rock guitarist and singer.
  • Other key artists — Sue Foley, Eric Bibb, Louisiana Red, Canned Heat, Candye Kane, Larry Garner, Omar & the Howlers, Aynsley Lister, Dani Wilde, Oli Brown, Big Daddy Wilson, Ally Venable, Royal Southern Brotherhood (featuring Devon Allman, Cyril Neville, Mike Zito and others), Joanna Connor, and many more. The Blues Caravan series has regularly featured rotating lineups of emerging and established talent, often highlighting guitarists and vocalists from Europe and North America.

Ruf releases typically combine strong songwriting, powerful guitar work, and high production values suited to both studio albums and live recordings. The label has also issued compilations celebrating its history, such as anniversary collections marking 12 and 20 years of activity.

Other Musical Styles

While firmly rooted in blues and blues-rock, Ruf’s roster has occasionally extended into related areas such as roots rock, soul-blues, and classic rock revival (for example, releases by Canned Heat, Spooky Tooth, and the Spin Doctors). The core identity, however, remains contemporary blues with an emphasis on live energy and crossover appeal.

Legacy

Ruf Records has played a major role in sustaining and modernizing the blues in Europe and beyond. By providing a consistent platform for both established figures and rising artists—particularly guitarists—and by actively promoting tours through the Blues Caravan, Thomas Ruf built a label that bridges traditional blues values with contemporary presentation. Its longevity (more than 30 years), substantial catalog, and industry recognition make it one of the most significant independent blues labels of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Luther Allison’s name remains central to its origin story, while the ongoing roster continues to demonstrate the label’s commitment to “where blues crosses over.”
