Provogue Records

Provogue Records is a Dutch independent record label specializing in blues and blues-rock, founded in the early 1990s by Jan van der Linden. It is now an imprint of the Mascot Label Group and has become one of Europe’s leading homes for guitar-driven contemporary blues and related rock styles. The label has released music by major international artists including Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout, Beth Hart, Robert Cray, Gary Moore, Gov’t Mule, and many others, helping to build careers and expand the audience for modern blues worldwide.

History and Ownership

Jan van der Linden established Provogue in the Netherlands around 1989–1991. He had previously co-founded the successful Dutch indie label Roadrunner Records and saw an opportunity to promote American and international blues and rock acts more effectively in the European market. Early releases included some world-music titles, but the label quickly focused on blues-rock and guitar-oriented blues.

In 1998 Provogue was acquired by (or integrated into) Mascot Records, becoming part of what is now the Mascot Label Group. Under this larger independent umbrella it retained its identity as the group’s primary blues and blues-rock imprint while gaining stronger international distribution and promotional resources. The label continues to operate from the Netherlands and remains active into the 2020s, regularly releasing new albums by established and emerging artists.

Notable Artists and Recordings – Blues and Blues-Rock Focus

Provogue’s catalog is heavily weighted toward contemporary blues and blues-rock, with a strong emphasis on guitarists and powerful vocalists:

  • Walter Trout — One of the label’s longest-standing and most important artists. His early Provogue releases, beginning with Life in the Jungle (1990), established him as a major European blues-rock force. Later albums such as Battle Scars (2014), Survivor Blues (2019), and Broken (2024) continued his reputation for fiery guitar work and deeply personal songwriting.

  • Joe Bonamassa — Provogue played a key role in launching and supporting Bonamassa’s solo career in Europe. Early albums including A New Day Yesterday (2000) and later high-profile releases such as The Ballad of John Henry (2009) helped build his international following. The label has continued to issue his studio and live recordings.

  • Beth Hart — The powerful blues-soul singer has released multiple successful albums on Provogue, including 37 Days (2007), collaborative projects with Joe Bonamassa (Don’t Explain, 2011), War in My Mind (2019), and more recent titles such as You Still Got Me (2024). Her emotionally charged performances have been central to the label’s modern blues identity.

  • Robert Cray — The Grammy-winning bluesman has issued several later-career albums on Provogue, including In My Soul (2014), maintaining the label’s connection to classic yet contemporary blues.
  • Other key blues and blues-rock artists — Gary Moore (notable later albums and reissues), Eric Gales, Kenny Wayne Shepherd (Dirt on My Diamonds series), Sonny Landreth (Bound by the Blues), Robin Trower, Eric Johnson, Philip Sayce, Warren Haynes / Gov’t Mule, Albert Cummings, Chris Duarte, Cedric Burnside, Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado, and many more. Compilations under the “Where Blues Meets Rock” banner have also highlighted the label’s aesthetic.

These releases typically feature high production values, strong guitar performances, and a blend of traditional blues structures with rock energy.

Other Musical Styles

While blues and blues-rock form the core of the catalog, Provogue has also released material that edges into hard rock, southern rock, and guitar-driven rock more broadly. Early in its history the label issued some world-music titles (for example, albums by Chief Ebenezer Obey and Babatunde Olatunji). Artists such as Gov’t Mule and Warren Haynes bring jam-band and southern-rock elements, while players like Eric Johnson and Robin Trower connect to progressive and classic rock guitar traditions. Overall, however, the label’s identity remains firmly rooted in blues and its rock extensions.

Legacy

Provogue Records has been instrumental in sustaining and expanding the audience for contemporary blues and blues-rock in Europe and beyond. By consistently signing and promoting skilled guitarists and distinctive vocalists, and by providing strong European distribution for American artists, the label has helped keep the blues vibrant in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Its integration into the Mascot Label Group has ensured ongoing activity and visibility. For many listeners, Provogue releases represent some of the strongest modern blues-rock of recent decades, balancing respect for tradition with contemporary energy and production.
